Some Like It Hot - 1959

This Billy Wilder fantasia stars Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. You need a better reason than that to see this hysterical movie? No, you don't, so go rent it.

This is another one of my 'feel good' movies, and for good reason: Lemmon and Curtis in drag. They play two out of luck musicians in 1920s Chicago, who go hide out in a traveling girls band after they witness the St. Valentines Day Massacre. It is just the most stupid, silly, and vacuous story, but who cares?

Of course it is more than just comic timing and Monroe (who had to be sewn into her dresses….wow….); it is a terrific script, quick with wit and innuendo. Wilder did a great job of keeping the pace snappy and an even better job of eliciting superb performances out of his disturbed performers (the boys hated being in drag, Marilyn hated her life, and everyone seems to have hated her during filming).

Enough with the sensible review. It's a hoot and I love it.
