Singin' In The Rain - 1952

Singin' in the Rain has to be the most perfectly created musical movie of all time; the plot is delightful and silly, but not stupid, while the numbers and dancing are fantastic, and altogether the story just has a wonderful rhythm all the way through. Okay, it slogs at "You Are My Lucky Star" but every musical needs a popcorn song (that is, a song somewhere in the middle of the movie where you don't feel bad about getting up to get more popcorn). Aside from the facts of the case, I love this movie and have seen it dozens of times because IT JUST MAKES ME HAPPY, damnit. Nothing in life is so bad that even a partial viewing of Singin' in the Rain can't fix. Just watching the "Fit as Fiddle" number pulls me out of any morbid reverie, and I dare anyone to stay in a bad mood while watching this movie, period.

That, and I wish I had learned how to dance. Seeing Gene Kelly and Donald O'Conner hoof it out to "Moses Supposes" makes me want to cry - the pure talent and dedication of those dancers is inspiring to behold. Every time I watch it, I keep telling myself I'm going to take tap lessons some day. Some day.
