It is of course de rigueur for an s/f fan to have this movie on their list of top ten movies of all time. And of course they must vehemently argue that the Director's Cut is the only version that matters the Final Cut is one of the most important pieces of cinema ever created, with the theatrical release being no better than bastardized tripe. So I have, and so I do.
But, remember I was just 14 or so when it was originally released. I loved the imagery and Ford's character (and just detested Sean Young, whom most of my male, geeky, s/f buddies just flat out adored), which all seemed mind-blowing. Aside from that, every aspect of the movie wrapped itself into my brain and has remained there ever since. It was only about 6 years from Star Wars: A New Hope, a full 20 years or so from the original Star Trek, and two years yet until Gibson's Neuromancer exploded everywhere. Science Fiction was a world evolving, and I was absolutely enthralled! I still am. Also, it is just a damn fine movie, very well made, and beautiful too. I was very impressionable, sure, but I knew that Hauer's character Batty kissing his maker was profound, and was at the core if not THE heart of the movie: damn your maker, damn yourself. It is a height that I aspire too. See the movie if you haven't…and remember, only the Director's Cut Final Cut matters!
And no, I did not have a clue that Deckard was a replicant too. Was I the only person on Earth who didn't know?
At IMDB: Blade Runner
