If there is a feel-good optimist movie of all time, this is it….which is not why I love it, but it helps. This is the story of a whacky bohemian woman who gets saddled with her conservative nephew (and his even more conservative trustee) in 1920-1930 NYC, while she rides the waves of riches to rags to riches again. It is a very funny film, and very uplifting, and yes, the clothes are fabulous. This is a world where everyone gets rich, true love triumphs, the good guys win, and the women all have knock-out wardrobes.
But okay, aside from that, here is why Auntie Mame is important to me: Auntie Mame, as played by the incomparable Rosalind Russell. She is a powerhouse woman, set to live life on her own terms and live it to the fullest. She was my first, and remains my best, guide in how to be fully alive in this nutso world. She also taught me the importance of being true to my own nature, even when others would judge me harshly for it. Sure, we are talking about a fictional character, but they can teach you important lessons too. Every time I watch this movie, I am reminded of the importance of unconditional love, personal strength, and a killer wardrobe. Sometimes I get shy, I wear a sneakers when I should wear heels, and I forget that giving love is more important than receiving it….Auntie Mame always sets me back on track!
