I consider myself a transhumanist, humanist, spiritual naturalist who practices Buddhism…okay, an atheist. I think the religious experience is important to life, but I do not think it must involve superstitious beliefs in metaphysical beings or divine books. One aspect of most traditional religions is the insistance on the fact that our minds control our lives; this idea is also found in New Age philosophies and (somewhat, and controversally) in quantum physics. Having “searched for God” in many quarters, I came to believe not in a supernatural diety but in humanity’s innate psychological resources. Divinity really is within us, inside and throughout our beings. Whether this is an evolutionary development of chemical reactions in the brain or not, it is a cosmic mystery that I do not think needs to be inventively dressed up as “God” in order to feel or honor.
